On November 29th, Common Ground Community and the Flatiron Partnership celebrated the official launch of the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District with an event at the Prince George Ballroom.

In attendance were Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Department of Small Business Services Commissioner Robert Walsh and property owners and tenants from throughout the BID District.

The Flatiron Partnership's Clean Streets program, the BID's comprehensive street cleaning initiative staffed by a crew of 13 cleaners servicing the BID district, has recorded some very impressive numbers in its first two months of operation.

Clean Team members, who can be seen in their navy winter uniforms canvassing the neighborhood from 7:00AM to 7:00PM on weekdays and from 7:00AM to 3:00PM on weekends, secure an average of 400 bags of litter each day (pre-BID litter map).

Since the November 1st launch of the Partnership's Clean Streets program, an estimated 90% of bills and stickers that had covered lampposts, mailboxes, building facades, public telephones and other fixtures in the district have been removed (pre-BID bills/stickers map).

With the help of a specialized cleaning crew with power washing equipment that scrubs sidewalks and removes graffiti in areas throughout the district one night each week, Clean Team members have removed graffiti from over 60 locations and have applied fresh paint to approximately 25 mailboxes, 30 lampposts, 20 alarm box stands and 18 security gates in the district (pre-BID graffiti map).

"The Clean Team has done an outstanding job in these first two months, " said Scott Kimmins, the Partnership's Director of Operations who coordinates the Clean Streets program. "We are very pleased by what has been accomplished and by the impact that the Partnership's Clean Streets program has had on this area in such a short period of time."

    Flatiron Holiday Walking Tours
    Holiday Walking Tours Picture

The Flatiron Partnership's Discover Flatiron historic holiday walking tour series was a tremendous success, with all four of the tours filled to capacity.

Author and historian Miriam Berman conducted these tours of the historic Flatiron neighborhood, highlighting seasonal points of interest such as the headquarters of the toy industry, the original FAO Schwarz location and the former site of the Lionel and Gilbert Hall model train showrooms.

Due to the tremendous success of the holiday tour series, the Partnership is planning to launch a regular weekly tour program in the spring of 2007.

Tree Lighting in Madison Square Park

The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership was a sponsor of Mad. Sq. Holiday, the Madison Square Park Conservancy's annual tree lighting ceremony at the Park's Northern Reflecting Pool.

Hundreds of neighbors joined together at dusk to hear joyful seasonal music by The New York Life Singers and JahPan Steel Drum Band and snacks from A Voce restaurant.

Madison Square Park was the site of the nation’s first public Christmas tree lighting.
