  • BID Participates in HOPE 2007 Survey

BID Executive Director Jennifer Brown, Deputy Director Timothy Cohen and Director of Operations Scott Kimmins participated in the Department of Homeless Services' Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE 2007) street survey to count the number of people living on New York City streets.

From midnight on January 29th through 4:00AM, the BID team canvassed streets throughout the area, counting the number of homeless individuals, conducting a survey with each individual encountered and offering transportation to a shelter to any homeless individual seeking assistance.

The important information gathered from the 3,000 HOPE 2007 volunteers throughout the City will be used to help homeless people leave the streets for a better life.

    Clean Team Profile: Benny

"He does an outstanding job," says BID Director of Operations Scott Kimmins of Adel "Benny" Ben-Brika, Crew Supervisor for the Flatiron Partnership's Clean Streets program. "We are lucky to have him."

Benny arrived in the United States with his wife from their native Tunisia in July of 2000 and found work the very next day on the street cleaning team of a Business Improvement District in New Jersey. He taught himself English and Spanish on the job and quickly worked his way up to supervisor.

In addition to supervising and training the Flatiron Partnership's 13 Clean Team members, who service the District from 7:00AM to 7:00PM on weekdays and from 7:00AM to 3:00PM on weekends, Benny spends much of his day removing graffiti from street fixtures, powerwashing building facades, scraping stickers off lampposts and painting mailboxes and traffic boxes.

"We're trying to do good things for the BID and for the neighborhood," says Benny. "When you can see an improvement it’s satisfying."
